The boat harbor with Mount Benson, north flank of Mount Marathon in background    Public launch at 'A' Dock
    F/v Robyn at low tide

The small boat harbor is a busy place. It is home to an active cannery, commercial fishing boats, the Coast Guard facilities & their boats, many pleasure, charter fishing and sightseeing boats.

The upper left photo is of the harbor from the waterfront boardwalk, the upper right photo is of the A dock launch area.

The commercial boat Robyn beached by a low tide - tides differ by around 8 feet to 18 feet every 11 hours here.

Be sure to be on the docks between 5pm & 6pm, the charter fishing boat hang up their days catch for pictures, then captain & crew fillet them for flash freezing or ....

Historic Downtown Seward - Shops, Restaurants, Parks, Bike Trails
Seward from Lowell Point Road     Japanese shrine in Waterfront Park     Commercial fishing gear at The Falls
The 1964 Earthquake film is shown daily thru the summer at the local library - Seward sustained substantial damage from the quake then from the resulting waves.
The Alaska SeaLife Center has multiple display pools as well as a touching pool area.  Woody the sea lion and the diving sea birds can be seen below the waterline - downstairs houses the underwater windows.
Seward hosts the largest 4th of July celebration in Alaska. Events involve the whole town - parade, crazy races and lots of venders from all over, we really know how to celebrate!  The main attraction is the Mount Marathon Ironman Race, it starts and ends downtown - with a 3000 foot climb in between.
The waterfront has a public shelter for rainy days, the walking/bike trail, a nifty playground and a skateboard park
(please wear protective gear when using).

City of Seward, Seward Parks & Rec (parks and city run campgrounds)

Fishing - Charter by Boat, Shore fishing, River/ Streams/ Saltwater
'B' Dock's Sign
There are many ways to fish:

Shoreline (rent a rod & reel, try your luck), rent a boat and gear (drop your line out in the Bay) or go on a charter.  A fishing charter can be half-day (for example: salmon/ling cod/rock fish/sea bass), full day (halibut plus salmon, etc) or multiple days out and around.  Fish are plentiful, the air is fresh and the fjords, bays, glaciers and islands make a beautiful backdrop for your trip.

FISH ON!  Fish, explore, enjoy...

of the area.  See the wildlife of the area listed below for land viewing.

  Wildlife of the Area
Sea Otters float...    Swans glide...    Grounded immature eagle...
Lolling Sea Lions...    Proud puffin...   These are some of the 'most likely to be seen' animals, lots of wildlife when you don't have the camera ready!

Spawning salmon encourage the black bears & grizzlies to 'share' the area with the eagles.

Migrating swans, sand hill cranes & blue heron are likely during the spring & fall.

Nope, haven't seen a penguin yet....

Wildlife Notes

Ducks & geese migrate...
The ducks & geese migrate spring and fall, 'over-nighting' in the marshy areas. Most nest above the Arctic Circle.

Wolves camouflage...
Wolves can sometimes be spotted at The Wye (Tern Lake) and around Kenai Lake. They use the evening shadows to camouflage their movement.

Orcas cruise...
Orcas cruise in and out of the bay, salmon & sea lions are some of their target species.

Puffin nest...
Puffin nest on Chiswell Island. These funny little guys are too heavy to fly if they've had a good feed!

Moose saunter...
Moose head for the higher, cool country. They saunter down to the streams around dusk, so when driving keep alert - they can be a hazard.

Eagles abound...
Eagles abound - they're after salmon and will steal your fillets if not guarded!  They put on quite an air show so look up and enjoy...
